Underpinning the technology are NVMe and PCIe 3.0 interfaces, which allow for speeds of up to 2GB/s (using a PCIe 4.0 interface).

    What a deranged sentence.

I think this is because you can treat PCIe 3.0 as its whole own things with later versions being iterative. Still a word soup but sometimes you can’t avoid it.

Yes, but using a standard external storage format is not why. Xbox uses a completely bespoke proprietary card that only approved vendors can use. This is just more expensive, which is basically how technology works now.

I honestly think it’s fantastic. It’s really only available on high end cameras right now, but putting it into a mass market device like a switch means they’ll become more commonly used in other devices since manufacturers won’t need to worry about users having the newer faster cards in hand already.

Someone needed to be the first mover so that everyone else can start putting these in other devices.

They’re not that consumer hostile most of the time, except those quirky Japanese sensibilities, which there is a lot of but it’s not malicious in intent imo. They are absolutely horrible to anyone who pirates their games, but those are not their customers.

Do you mean pirating games that are still for sale? Because plenty of emulator users only pirate old stuff that isn’t currently for sale.

I meant that in legal sense they pirate stuff. Copyright laws being goofy is another thing entirely but Nintendo works in a legal framework where not defending your trademarks means you can lose them.

It’s probably almost nearly 100% of emulator users who pirate games.

Even Nintendo pirated their own games before releasing them on the Wii’s Virtual Console.

Nintendo couldn’t pirate their own stuff because they own it. They downloaded ROMs because they can’t be arsed to dump them themselves, similar to 99% of population. Kind of hypocritical with all the DRM related laws that they support but at least they recognise they’re unenforceable.

I don’t dispute imaginary statistics, there’s no point.

And if that were true, it makes no difference. Nintendo meticulously goes after fan projects and emulators that are completely legal. If they want to go after sites distributing ROMs - totally fair.

Saying Nintendo is only anti-consumer to pirates is a bootlicker take.

Nintendo went against one emulator that was legal, Ryujinx, and I support critiquing Nintendo for this. In other instances they were going after pirates and people infringing on their currently used trademarks and copyrights.

                You are completely wrong.

The Yuzu team was profiting from game leaks and piracy, and that’s illegal. Their software was not illegal. Nintendo’s lawsuit was riddled with bullshit claims about circumventing encryption and other made-up offenses, and resulted in the 100% legal development of both Yuzu and Citra being forcefully terminated. The actually just solution would have been to forbid them from monetizing their projects by promising fixes for unreleased software.

Here’s a simple analogy: if you own a 3D printer and sell objects made with that printer, some of which are illegal for whatever reason (e.g. parts for making untraceable firearms), should a court forbid you from ever using a 3D printer ever again, even if it’s to make a kickstand for your tablet, or should it forbid you from making illegal parts only?

Yuzu devs are gone from the scene but the source code is out there. Turns out developing an emulator requires a team of full time employees that you need to fund through Patreon and that’s kinda far beyond a hobby project, no? You’re so anti Nintendo that you started cheering for another company that was outright infringing on their IP by using Nintendo trademarks in their own marketing materials.

Eh, I would suspect that a majority of games “pirated” are game you can’t buy anymore (ot at least not realistically).

Also is it pirating if I can’t find my copy of the game anymore?

Man, I pirate stuff all the time, I just don’t like people making up things to explain themselves, especially if I know they can afford stuff they pirate.

Yes, if it’s old or you can’t afford it then just get it. Copyright, trademark and patent laws are a joke and it’s a sensible way to revolt over them.

Latest Nintendo dealings with Switch emulation give me mixed feelings. Yuzu was obviously benefitting monetarily (Patreon) from encouraging piracy (showing games before their release). Fuck those guys. Nintendo shouldn’t have gone after Ryujinx though and I’m quite angry about it.

They don’t go on sale because Nintendo games are not disposable like n-th instalment of Call of Duty or NFL.

They sell gameplay and not graphics and that’s timeless. If it was worthless people wouldn’t be so angry with them for going after emulators. There are also no games over $80 announced and this time digital copies are cheaper while still shareable (although no reselling).

N64 games regularly cost in the range of $60 to $80 in the mid 90s. In today’s dollars, games would need to be double that to match the same cost. Just because the price goes up a little in the last 10 years, doesn’t change the fact that games are at a historic low cost. There are reasons to be upset about how far (or not) your hard earned dollars can go today, but video game prices are not one of them, objectively.

The cartridges themselves make up for the price difference. Don’t equate the physical cost of n64 cartridges versus the completely trivial cost of distributing software now.

Nintendo makes unique hardware and games. It’s a consequence of philosophy that drives this company. There are good and bad things about it but explaining things as they are is not their defence. I’m not defending it because at the root of things all of this is consequence of capitalism and getting angry over this would be like getting angry over rain. My way of dealing with this is joining a socialist party and contributing to my surrounding environment, not ragging about Nintendo, who despite their faults are one of a kind.

and then immediately follow that with “grow up.” fascinating.

anyway, the hardware nor the software nintendo sells aren’t unique in the slightest. and most of the nintendo branded software on the switch 2 won’t be new nintendo IP. Mostly older ip… that they’ll charge you for if you’d like to use the new fancy 120fps and graphics!

the games you already own. for switch. you get to give them more money. on top of the 70-80 you already payed for the game.

                =)

and the rest of the content on the switch 2 is stuff everyone with a next gen console has had for a while now. hell even lower end handheld PCs are already around and cheaper than what nintendo wants. and the games are cheaper because they go on real sales. nintendo doesn’t really know how to do those.

but I dearly hope you enjoy.

Nintendo used to make unique hardware. The Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS and even the Virtual Boy innovated and brought something to the table that nobody else was offering. Even the Switch’s erasure of the handheld/console divide was unique. This Switch 2, though? It’s a Switch on steroids. This is the same uncreative shit that Sony and Microsoft have been doing, just an iteration on their previous offering.

Nintendo’s innovations have purchased it a lot of good will from consumers. When the innovations stop, expect the good will to follow suit. That’s only natural.
