Hate crime and terrorism charges were announced Thursday after a Jewish man was shot while walking to synagogue in Chicago over the weekend in what police now say was a “targeted” attack.

Police had earlier this week announced multiple charges against 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, who originally faced six counts of attempted first-degree murder and seven for aggravated discharge of a firearm at officers and firefighters, among other charges.

On Thursday, Abdallahi was charged with an additional felony count of terrorism and one felony count of a hate crime, Chicago’s top cop, Supt. Larry Snelling, said.

“We want everybody to know that we will never tolerate violence that’s rooted in hate and bigotry,” Snelling said during a press conference announcing the charges.

Ald. Debra Silverstein, of the city’s 50th Ward, had previously said the victim was wearing a kippah at the time of the attack and noted the community where the shooting took place, West Rogers Park, has a large Orthodox Jewish population.

I’m guessing my only doing that in shul during something like a wedding or funeral out of respect has been better for my health.

When I was in grade 4 my living room window got shot up by 7 or 8 bbs because we had a menorah in the window. Another time, my next door neighbours toppled our snow mountain down in front of our house with their snow plow while yelling “fucking k***s”.

That’s how I learned what that word meant

Gotten? When I was a kid in the 80s, the temple my grandparents went to every week was firebombed. Thankfully no one was inside at the time.

Maybe, but I don’t know that making sure you’re not visibly Jewish is really a sign of anything good.

I look really stereotypically Jewish regardless. But I’m guessing the lack of a kippah makes them more hesitant.

I will stand and side with all innocent human beings persecuted and terrorized by others.

Jewish, Muslim, gay, trans, white, black, disabled: I don’t care. I support you as people, as the same as me.

I don’t support some leaders of religion, govs, militaries, and those that follow them.

Those are the people who need to be protested.

Not someone who is just walking down the street.

That makes you the same as the monsters.

Lots of people here are operating on the “hurt the right people” maga energy regardless of their alignment. They just want to see people hurt.

Do you ever write a comment and think, “Maybe I should’ve ended that one a little earlier”?
