RCS for apple sucks ass though. I use android and my wife used apple. Her Rcs is so sporadic in working it’s almost funny.
Read receipts have yet to work. I’m not sure if they’re off by default or it’s a bug in the RCS implementation.
Would be nice if there could be an implementation by someone else than apple or google

Now if only my carrier will support RCS sometime soon 🙃 I convinced a bunch of my friends to upgrade iOS with the promise of better group texts but it’s all for nought as I’m still left out of group chats.

I certainly do. iOS users insist on SMS and SMS is awful. I gently sway those I can influence to modern messaging but that is not everyone.
I guess so? I haven’t met anyone who’s using sms for that but apparently that’s just regional.
I’d sooner ask “why do people care about messenger apps”? Like what? Why do we need 5 different programs to talk to people because everybody’s on different platforms - none of which are even domestically owned by my country or really controlled at all by it.
RCS is slightly closer to a step in the right direction, but the fact that Google is so deeply latched into it still gives me some concern.
They don’t need 5 programs, there are lots of messaging services that work across the major platforms that people use, I don’t understand why we would want a new , “official” client made by google which locks out anyone they don’t like (rooted devices, third parties) which doesn’t even have the advantages of already existing options in terms of privacy, usability, and security.

iOS RCS works through the stock Messages app like iMessage does. It’s not a separate program.
They still need an RCS client on PC, etc.
All the apple users I know use WhatsApp, Signal, telegram and not one uses IMessage, not even the company I work at, which uses iPhones mainly, uses IMessage for communication, private or otherwise.I imagine on macOS it’s the same; Messages or nothing. No separate clients are involved.

But you’re saying there’s one app that will connect to them all and work? I don’t think that’s the case unless there’s something like Pidgin for Android, I guess…
No, I’m saying that there isn’t. You can use all those things on every platform, RCS would be the 6th program you need to install besides the other 5 you already have and it seems useless compared to the rest.

But RCS is intended to be an industry standard. A user doesn’t install the internet on their phone, they install a web browser that is able to interact with the various standards that make the internet. In the same way RCS should make those other messaging apps either irrelevant or force them to become somewhat more interoperable while potentially making it easier for open source solutions.
That being said, Google are being absolute cunts when it comes to RCS. They bitched about Apple not supporting it while simultaneously making it nearly impossible to have any app other than theirs that can do RCS messaging.
So we’re back to square one, five messengers and one which “can do anything”©®™ led by google. No thanks I’d rather let SMS be as it is.
As far as I can see you can’t join the network without some kind of authorization (see rooted phones being unable to).
My rooted Pixel 9 Pro has RCS enabled. Just needed the Play Integrity Fix patch installed through Magisk. Though I think Google is changing that in May, so we’ll see what happens.
That’s the point of GSM standardizing the encryption method. Progress is slow until it isn’t. We have to start somewhere.

Easy. I’ve got Google Messages, Signal, Telegram, Slack, FB Messenger, and Nextcloud Talk.
I use them all.
Signal, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Google Messages. I guess Snapchat could be on there, too.

I don’t know any person using sms for regular communication, everyone I know uses some kind of messenger app.
So because nobody in your life uses it, it doesn’t need to exist? What?
Are you the most important person on the planet, or just incapable of thinking that other people’s lives might be different to yours?
The point is to take the base communication technology (texting) and bring it to the 21st century without being beholden to some American company.
Nearly everyone I know is still using SMS, even if they’re also messaging using another app.
It probably depends on where you live.
Why do you prefer/use SMS?
Like Whatsapp? I prefer to minimize the amount of data Facebook collects on me.
SMS can literally be read by anyone spinning up a fake mobile tower, there is no e2e encryption and probably a few other security concerns I don’t even know, I’ll use WhatsApp before I use SMS as secure communication.
Edit: RCS fixes (some of?) this but at this point why not use something even better?
People who still need to receive or respond to SMS or MMS, for work or for stupid companies that still use it for 2fa.
I doubt that those companies will switch to RCS unless they’re forced to and I’d rather they switch to time based tokens generated on the client device instead.
