I got a couple cats from the shelter a long time ago. One of the coolest things, they trained them to allow claw trimming and taught us how to keep it going.

Super high-value treats, do this over the course of weeks or months, whatever it takes. a treat to touch a paw -> a treat to hold a paw -> a treat to touch a bean -> a treat to inspect a nail -> a treat to touch a tool to a nail -> a treat to nip the tip -> a treat to nip 2 tips -> yada yada

one step at a time, most will eventually give.

I have a 100lb pitbull with a nail trim phobia so bad that he will politely leave the room if he even sees me using wire strippers… AMA.

For ours, we use one of those suspension harness things that hang from a door jam, and some narcotic sedatives from the vet. He’s the sweetest thing in the entire world, and he’ll let a chihuahua bark him into a corner, and then be sad about it for the rest of the day because he couldn’t make a new friend, but when nail clippers are involved, he just loses his entire mind. It really is like a phobia in the true DSM sense of the word.

Bro and sis cat that I have; Bro is a big tough guy but acts like the most whiny cow when he’s getting his nails trimmed. Sister; she panics and can’t even get started then her brother panics because she’s panicking.
