Explanation: Despite the post-war reputation of German science as ZE FINEST IN ZE WORLD, during WW2, much of the logistics of the Nazi military was handled by horses. Very, uh, high-tech?
Their logistics situation was a little fucked, especially once they started eating the horses on the Eastern Front.
I always thought using horses was pretty normal and unsurprising during WW2 but that’s because I learned mostly about my own country of Finland and we were pretty damn poor and not very industrialized.
The Allies were largely motorized in their logistics, though there was some use of horses with the Soviets. This was largely because the UK had made a major effort to motorize logistics before the war, and because the USA was producing (and distributing) trucks like they were going out of style.
It was fucked from the start for not having oil. Without oil, horses are the best option. Not that they didn’t try to change it:
