Summary

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

Sheinbaum stated that while Trump can refer to the American part of the body of water as the Gulf of America, the rest of the world will continue to refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump signed the order on Jan. 20, 2025, following his inaugural promise, citing the Gulf’s importance to the U.S. economy. Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s stance on territorial integrity.

This follows Trump’s recent controversial foreign policy ideas, including proposing Canada as a U.S. state, acquiring Greenland, and considering military action to reclaim the Panama Canal.

I feel that this somehow requires a “sane” qualifier.

I live here, we just call it the Gulf Coast.

Nobody gives a flying fuck what the overgrown orange baby wants to call it.

While I love pedantry, and find interest in the confusion and irritation using “American” to mean “U.S. Citizen” can cause; in this case, using American is fine for either definition (“U.S. Citizen” or “Person who lives in the American continent(s)”). Either way, the comment is correct and has similar meaning. :D
