    Explanation: Roman soldiers usually wore ‘caligae’, depicted on the right - hobnailed leather sandals. However, because of their ubiquity and usage, caligae are often translates as ‘boots’, such as the common translation of ‘Caligula’ as ‘Little Boots’. Saying ‘caligae are boots’ or ‘caligae are sandals’ will almost always find you someone to contradict you with the opposite conclusion - there seems to be no winning on the issue!

    I’ve got a pair of keens like the one on the left and they’re 10/10 shoes in the summer. they’re like steel-toes sandals I hiked with them all over SE Asia a few years back.
