  • Zorin itself is foss but paying for features like themeing and software Is imo against the spirit of linux, they should, (again imo) release zorin pro as the default and simply accept donations. Like most distro maintainers. Even more frustrating, is the advertised features are just normal features and software readily available for free on other distros being a paywalled. Its very likely that a user could get all of the listed features on the free version without paying. I also misread the website, ms office and adobe premier are not even what is included. In fact they do not list the specific names of the alternatives that they use in the pro version. I would bet that the pro version Has all foss software that is being hidden behind the price tag. I will do more quick research and edit this comment if that is the case.

Edit: Yeah i nailed it, its all foss software available through most package managers or flatpak heres a list.

Additional Software Included in Zorin Pro: Office & Productivity:

LibreOffice: A comprehensive office suite compatible with Microsoft Office/365 documents: https://www.libreoffic…

Scribus: A desktop publishing application: https://sourceforge.ne…

Graphics & Multimedia: Krita: A powerful, open-source image editing and painting software: https://krita.org/

Inkscape: A vector graphics editor: https://inkscape.en.so…

    Blender: A free and open-source 3D creation suite: https://www.blender.org/

GIMP: A free and open-source image manipulation program: https://www.gimp.org/d...

Evince: A Gnome document viewer: https://apps.gnome.org…

Foliate: A simple and lightweight e-book reader: https://flathub.org/ap...

    Kdenlive: A non-linear video editor: https://kdenlive.org/e...

    FreeCAD: A free and open-source 3D design application: https://www.freecad.or…

    LibreCAD: A free and open-source 2D CAD software: https://wiki.librecad…

Darktable: An open-source digital photo management and editing tool: https://www.darktable…

  • ALL of the listed features from zorin pro have free alternatives, unless you really want microsoft office, screen sharing, adobe premier, etc… just stick with the free version and find free viable alternatives. Libreoffice, kdenlive, etc. How did you land on zorin to begin with? Most new users are recommended to use fedora, ubuntu-gnome, and linux mint. To me, just looking at zorins website they do not share the most basic principles of the linux space (being free and open source). I highly recomend switching, if you could run

    echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP

This will output the name of your display manager like gnome, kde, etc. The version of zorin you are running is more than certainly using a popular one. Just find a distro that uses the same one. And your user experience will be almost exactly the same. Zorin might have some QOL features but definitely not anything you couldnt implement yourself.

Feel free to reach out here for more help if you run into any brick walls. You already dual booted your pc so i have faith that you have a pretty good grasp on what you are doing. If time is a factor and you just need a distro that “works” stick with what you have, and find FOSS alternatives for zorin. Best of luck

  • Agreed, Its barely a zelda game but regardless of how easy the puzzles were, they were fun. But yes there were too many and 100%ing the game was an absolute slog because of the similarity between alot of the shrines

“Combat was tedious” sure. If your bad at the game, alot of attacks are parryable and weapons and food are craftable. Even if i wasnt equipped to deal with a situation the enviroment always provides alternative ways to deal with enemies.

“zelda dungeons were the cornerstone of game design” I have to disagree zelda dungeons have always been either bullshit or as you put it mind numbingly easy and tedious. They were innovative for sure, but they were often obnoxiously long. Stopping for a few days and coming back to the game youd forget wtf you were doing and why. The music however i agree with, botw does not have a single track i remember off the top of my head.

The story was always trash. Except majoras mask and minish cap. But i agree about the cutscenes, Its not hard to tell a story through gameplay, so its lazy for sure.

All that said, i never gave botw a shining review. I just said that they actually TRIED something different. Even if it wasnt executed that well.

ALSO how tf are you not going to mention the final boss fight of botw? That shit had my jaw on the floor with how tedious and ass that was.

  • nintendo does not want you to play their old titles, theyve been quoted saying “emulation stifles innovation” to me this just says that we cant play old games because it makes their new ones look bad. Nintendo is pulling a call of duty on us, just re-releasing games with a fresh coat of paint and a new gimmick for example MK with its new open world. Zelda with an open world. Smash brothers, Pokemon… you get it. Dont get me wrong i love these games and IPs, but the games have barely changed since 64. I will say the new DK and MK titles look great, but Ill just wait till we can fully emulate switch 2 and keep my money.

Plus i wont have to worry about them bricking my PC. The last good hardware theyve released was the 3ds and wii u. but they only became great when the modding scene stepped in and made them so. They are clearly worried about the modding scene, dumping games, and adding emulators for old titles. To me, nintendo is dead and has been for a while. The dev teams within nintendo are still pushing out gold. Whilst everyone else there is looking to fuck over the consumer.

  • Personally, I configure my entire os before signing in to websites or any software (or putting any privacy critical info on my system) then I backup my os to my NAS using rescuezilla, using linux its usually max 30Gb. I also have a private github repo that i backup my dotfiles to just in case my NAS kicks the bucket. Going back to a “clean” install after doing something stupid kinda sucks but at least all your hard work making it look and feel the way you want will persist. I also highly reccomend doing some sort of offline & off network backup for privacy sensative information. Best of luck, I feel your pain I nuked my system once after days of work and i said, never again.

  • honestly, I like your perspective better, its way less depressing than how I normally view people. Its still sad to know that people dont praise eachother or themselves enough. but at least from your viewpoint the people I deemed weirdos are not the monsters I percieve. It gives everyone room to grow, Where as im generally more interested in myself. Praising others, Is definitely something I should work on.

I feel bad now, but when I see people practicing basic decency I generally see it as “the bare minimum”, When obviously thats not the case. Your perspective is very much appreciated, Thank you!

  • but for most tend to exaggerate enormously what other think of ourselves and the truth is, no one cares much.

This is true, but for most people with S.A.D. they were frequently exposed to people who DO care. Family for example constantly commenting on your looks and demenor can have a lasting impact on someone. I was lucky enough to become more rebelious and anti-conformist. but some like my SO, are constantly worried about what others think because its so engrained in them that the people around them are making snide comments to them or behind their backs.

For me, and what im trying to get her to understand. Is that “indifference” is paramount. Its a difficult thing to do but becoming indifferent to the opinions of others is way more powerful than attempting to believe something that isnt always true (that noone cares much). Truth is we are constantly surrounded by wierdos who take a single look at another person and make 1000 judgements.

I find it to be a way more powerful tool to just think about how sad they are, how lonely they must feel, how every foul word is likely a projection of their own lack of self worth. Shrug my shoulders and walk away. Sadly children are not given the opportunity to “walk away”. Especially in the case of parents and family.

  • Automatics and other weapons and explosives already require heavy tax stamps and long approval processes.

I know but they were asking specifically about liability insurance. and I summed up the total cost similarly to that of a vehicle as “maintaing a registration” sorry for the confusion.

I was considering getting a 9mm for home defense in my new location. But ive also been considering less lethal devices since most violent encounters my family members (grandpa side) have had were de-escalated by simply brandishing their weapon.

I wrote this later on in the conversation. It probably seems contradictory but, Im with you man, you cannot be too careful nowadays, but I do strongly believe all of the mentioned situations (except wildlife) do not require a weapon of the caliber i was describing in reference to the liability insurance. sometimes a less lethal option would have been completely viable options. However in the case of animal attacks such as bears, dogs, wolves and coyotes. A slighly higher caliber would be necessary hence why you often see park rangers and handlers with .45/.50 on their hip.

What would you recommend for less lethal home defense? An another user suggested a shotgun with loaded with rocksalt, which has me looking into different non lethal cartridges. This seems like the best option for me and my antigun gf. Im looking for something she could wield in a worst case senarion im not around.

I already carry a quickdraw knife (cant and shouldnt carry a switch in my state) Example of the quickdraw with no springs https://youtu.be/PfIXVvwFnQo

  • Dont know if youve been to the US or know anyone here personally but guns are not as prevalent as you might think. Theyre definitely “around” but id imagine many people could go their whole life without seeing one. Obviously you have states like texas where they have an open carry day, You can see people walking around with rifles and ARs. But not including police officers, and millitary personel. I just dont see them. Your paranoia is justafied tho, we definitely see the worst of humanity often enough.

  • Nice, my grandpa is a gunsmith. I met alot of really nice people through his buisness. I guess that gave me a unique perspective on this debate. Being from north east USA not many people ive spoken to have aligned with me.

Congrats on the purchases I was considering getting a 9mm for home defense in my new location. But ive also been considering less lethal devices since most violent encounters my family members (grandpa side) have had were de-escalated by simply brandishing their weapon. Also my SO is very anti-gun Id want something even shed feel safe to have around or in the worst possible case use.

  • Absolutely, and like sports cars and trucks having higher costs. I believe single fire, burst action, and shotguns would have a lower cost than fully automatic or heavier caliber weapons would. Its relative destructive power would determine its cost to maintain a registration.

They are luxury items after all, no person really “needs” a weapon. Even with government tyrany, molotovs, home made liberator pistols, and the killdozer come to mind as more than viable alternatives.

  • The shift in public perception on weapon ownership when they see actual tyrany in america is very interesting. Ive been 100% pro gun and have gotten so much backlash from family and friends for being so. I dont even own a gun and to me it has been obvious that the government and media were using mass shootings (not actually commiting them as far as we know) to disarm the people.

There are and have always been such a large number of safe, moral, and sane gun owners in this country. Normal people who target practice, hunt, shoot competatively, design guns, modify them, defend their homes, study weapon history, or even just put them on display. It baffles me that anyone could be so against normal hard working americans doing no harm whatsoever.

Not a single person I spoke with was ever against owning a car when I brought it up. I was always given the same “its not the same thing”. The common denominators in vehicular violence and gun violence are mental health, education, and financial status. I dont want to compare numbers on how many people are killed in either situation because it does not matter. Human lives are lost everyday needlessly to both of these. But only guns get talked about.

Curious to know if you or anyone else have recently become pro gun, or have you always felt this way?
