  • I like Terminator 1 a lot more than T2.

It’s much more grim-dark with horror elements. I would even go as far as saying there are subtle cyberpunk motifs in T1. There is also a modicum of character development. Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese) does a great job.

T2 feels more like a teen’s summer action movie in comparison. It lacks that edge and is overly sentimental.

I will note that growing up I liked T2 a lot more than T1.

  • Unfortunately, nobody can watch The Dungeon today because all prints have been lost to history.

That’s really too bad. I don’t watch too many movies from the silent era, but I would be interested in checking this one out.

Get Out won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay? This is news to me. They deserve it, it was a good movie.

I was surprised that while I liked Get Out, I did not enjoy Nope at all. Still have to check out Us, it seems like a fun horror.

  • I am not going to get into the drama around Oscar nominations, however, I will disagree with Brolin that Part II was the better film.

I am a huge Dune fan (have read all the Frank Herbert Dune books, have read Dune and Dune Messiah at least 10 times and have read the others books in the series several times).

Part I was relatively focused and was an excellent representation of the introductory part of the book. Part II simply did too many things at the same time. I spoke to many people who watched the (new) movies, but never read the book and they found many components of Part II to be a bit confusing.

Honestly, they should have gone with a trilogy. Dune is basically written as a 3 act book. The intro which Part I captures perfectly. Paul Atreides and Jessica Atreides’ integration into Fremen society is the second act. And the third act culminates with the resolution of the narrative.

Part II is a great film, just it could have been better if it was split into two.

  • I actually think this is a fair take and I see where you’re coming from. There is definitely a certain type for “streaming service sci-fi” shows and Silo falls into it. I had the same reaction to “Man in the High Castle” and I decided to skip The Rings of Power and Foundation because of this.

I am a huge fan of FO1/FO2 (and New Vegas), but I’ve given up on the franchise otherwise (there are better modern alternatives).

I guess with Silo it helped that I never read the novels. I can’t watch shows that butcher the core concept of my favourite novels. I am also curious about the lore. On the bright side, I did start reading the Silo books.

  • Long-time Ars reader/subscriber here. They’re a pretty source for English language tech news. I am particularly fond of their reporting on tech adjacent public policy issues (US centrism notwithstanding).

One area where they are weak is taking a critical look at Apple. They keep promoting the notion that Apple is somehow different.

They did report on Apple’s censorship of steaming content on AI (due to the upcoming release of Apple intelligence) and critiques of the CCP, but beyond the initial reporting it’s like nothing happened.

They all use Apple products, nothing wrong with that they have excellent products, but you would think that a tech news site would have at least one or two journalists who use Windows/Android/Linux full time.

It’s almost as if they need a “hero company” in their lives and can’t deal with the notion that all these tech megacorps are the same; sketchy, dishonest and corrupt.
