I cannot stand Forgotten Realms. Never liked it going all the way back to 2nd edition.
Greyhawk was a MUCH better setting, with a more cohesive vision and CERTAINLY a much more interesting cosmology
Forgotten Realms is a hodge-podge of 20 settings glued together with zero appreciation for thematic crossover that has been revamped and rebooted so many times that substantial class mechanic differences DEPEND ON WHAT ERA YOU ARE PLAYING IN! That is fucking INSANE
Greyhawk presented an eternal timelessness where you could drop in on any era without having to read 5+ years of errata notes on why they renamed the negative energy plane and whether or not you are allowed to cast anything above 3rd level
The Great Wheel was, is, and will ALWAYS be the most fertile and relatable cosmology that has ever existed in a d20 setting and they changed it purely for CHANGE’S SAKE!
TL;DR: Fuck Forgotten Realms, LONG LIVE GREYHAWK!
Golarion lore - “Hold my ale.”
Anyways, yeah, they should just have different world settings for different adventure types instead of Frankensteining them together incoherently.
To me, all settings are just different iterations in the Planescape.
I will never argue against this, Sigil is my true home but there’s no way that WoTC made that a main setting
Dark sun FOR LIFE
Ok I gotta admit Athas is an amazing fucking setting but in NO WAY could be considered the ‘core’ setting
I mean, it used to be. Before 4e, it was the default setting.
But I disagree about it being better. I am, and will forever be, a Forgotten Realms fan. Not even because of the game; I just find the lore and mythos to be so much better and I was in love with it from the original Icewind Dale book trilogy before I knew it had a campaign setting in D&D.
I disagree, Forgotten Realms got its push in the 3.0 era, and was fully established by supplement count in 3.5.
Largely due to Neverwinter Nights and as you mentioned Icewind Dale, and how many of you it brought to the fandom, guaranteeing Greyhawk a sad capitalist death
And I have never forgiven any of you for it
In all fairness, you can still do what we had to do in the 3.0 days before it actually moved over to FR by default and just… Set your game in that setting.
I don’t know how fucked up the rules have gotten first-hand (cuz I never got the books for 4 or 5 because I didn’t care for them when I played campaigns in the rules), but surely they still have sections on how to convert/create things to fit the rules in the DM handbook, right?
In all fairness, the focus on Forgotten Realms meant a ton of more resources went into developing modules and merchandise for that patchwork mess than the primary setting the actual developers played in
Can you IMAGINE if Greyhawk had HALF the budget of Forgotten Realms…
I don’t know enough about greyhawk to form an opinion. But I kind of like that forgotten realms has lots of different areas that all feel different. There’s a home for any style of campaign you might want.
I’m old enough that I actually thought Greyhawk was the default setting.
I thought this was a pretty common opinion these days, but maybe that’s just in my information bubble.
I have had some struggle trying to find a Greyhawk campaign to join, it’s kind of fueled this post
Yeah there isn’t much official content for it in 5e.
