I watched this for the first time the other day, and thought it was absolutely awesome.
While it’s a comedy film, it surprisingly touched on a lot of areas seen in David Graeber’s ‘Bullshit Jobs’ concept, 14 years earlier.
Well acted, supremely funny and well written, and a particular joy to anyone who’s worked in an office, or had a family member who did. There’s not really any low or slow point in the film, it’s steadily excellent the whole way through.
It’s one of my favorite movies. I was still a pre-18 teen when it came out, in fact 1999 was an amazing year for western media, not just amount of amazing movies, but also music and games.
But I always found it odd how it resonated with me so well when I was barely old enough to work in an office, perhaps besides as a telemarketer or intern or something.
Anywho, to be an old man yelling at clouds here, I wonder if it’s worth straining archive.org’s servers by watching full movies from them. I’m thinking of this specifically because they’re currently being sued for 700 million dollars by the music industry and it might not survive this time around.PS: Speaking of Mike Judge, he’s made some other amazing things like Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill and Idiocracy. I just watched Common Side Effects which was amazing as well.
As weird as it sounds, this is the movie that made me want to work in an office when I saw it as a kid. Now, after having worked in several offices, I realize how spot-on it was.

… Surprising?
Just ahead of the curve.
… Sorta like how people seemed to think Carlin was… joking.
Delivered in an entertaining, humorous way?
Yes.
Joking?
No.
Surprising in the sense that I just wasn’t expecting it, as I wasn’t really familiar with it.
Ah, my bad, I saw it decades ago, and you did say you just saw it, I was needlessly hostile.
IIRC, … I think the movie actually did inspire a number of people, in real life, to attempt to do the … fractional penny slush fund.
Yep, here’s a more recent case:
… he said that once they fired him, his opinion was, ‘Fuck ‘em,’” the report said.
An inspiration to us all
No worries man :)
I love that someone actually attempted that!
My kid watched it when he was in high school. He enjoyed it, but I told him I don’t think he really felt it. Then, as an adult, he got a soul killing office job. He ended up rewatching it a couple years ago. His response was something like,“Oh. Shit. Yeah. Fucking hell.”
What would you do with a million dollars?
Scroll 2 Lemmy’s at the same time.
Fuckin’ A.
You don’t need a million bucks to scroll 2 lemmys. Look at @[email protected] … They post and scroll all day and they broke as shit.
Now I wish I’d saved my Fuckin’ A for this comment
Edit the other comment to ‘fucking B’.
It’s been at least months since I last watched it, maybe years. So I did it again, thank you!
I watched it the first time last week with a friend. We both thought (not in a bad way), that we already knew everything through memes about the movie and it still was a nice watch.
What struck me was the psychologist scene, in which he asked to be switched off for office hours. And I was like: look he wants the severance procedure!!! Damn I miss this show already.
My wife is Filipino and had never worked in an office environment. She still got it and had some solid laughs. That says something I think.
Thanks, I needed to rewatch that. Y’all do watch parties anywhere?
Here’s a list of watch parties on Mastodon and Bluesky:
There’s a b-movie watch party in just a couple hours (9pm EST), that’s announced weekly on [email protected]:
I don’t think we’ve done one here on [email protected] but I’d attend if we did!
You just watched it for the first time? Wow
The movies 26 years old. I work with people in my office who weren’t born in '99
Wow this is amazing. I had a bad attitude about this when it came out and for a long time after because “I didn’t work in an office.” By 2015 I knew I made a mistake and now I will watch, probably tonight
Its depiction of IT workers is timeless and fairly accurate. Fuck printers.
Such a great film, music and actors all on point!
damn, how can I watch Office Space on Youtube?
The link in the post is to the full movie on Archive.org :D
This link just made me watch the whole god damn thing
Blowing up the spot OP…
