What makes you think the stock market crashing is not his aim?

I think it’s a combination of both that and stupidity, of both him and the oligarchs. Yes, they like manipulating the market and being able to buy up stock when it’s down and it was working for a while there, but they didn’t bargain on just how far trump would go and how much he would fuck things up. trump figured he could cow other countries they way he does Americans and since he can never admit he’s wrong, he’ll keep doubling down even though it’s not working, causing further havoc. I don’t think he believed China would retaliate with a 34% reciprocal tariff, and he’s not going to listen to the oligarchs when they tell him it’s time to back off. They installed into the presidency a monster they can’t control

People keep repeating this. It’s all on purpose because billionaire snap buy everything cheap

My question continues to be that, such strategy makes sense if you know what you bought cheap would be valuable again. However, trumptard has antagonised the WORLD, even if trade resumes, everyone would jack up prices for the USA to include the risk of another wave of stupid and nobody would sign any long-term agreement so you’d wind up not knowing if your product would cost 10, 20 or 50% more next quarter…

Because people are downright ignoring who he’s working for. His actions make absolute sense as a Russian asset. And no, he’s not trying to screw the US allies, at least that is not his main objective.

EU, Canada, UK, they’re just collateral damage. They’ll hurt but they’ll recover because while loosing the US they still have each other and China. And in their recovery they’ll help isolating the US. After they learn to live without the US it’s game over.

His main target is the US itself. He’s trying to collapse the US economy and isolate them to prevent from rising up again. He’s trying to destroy the US reputation in the international community. He tried it once but now he’s making sure it sticks. With a broken economy and no allies the US will loose its capacity to project military power. Even if a Democrat is elected nobody will ever trust the US again.

Trump works for Putin, it’s completely obvious. His job is to sabotage the US. And he’s doing a great job. And by the time Americans face the facts it will be too late. Maybe it already is.

There’s probably multiple motivations. He serves a motley-crew of white christian nationalists, oligarchs (many with very fascist ideologies themselves), and himself. I think he’s kinda acting like a power-broker/deal-maker for many different people (similar to his buddy Epstein). The numbers don’t make sense because they don’t really matter if the goals are to 1) cause the world to lose faith in the US 2) can be used to negotiate things like de-dollarization 3) can be used to solicit bribes from politicians and businesses. If they really want to bring manufacturing back to the US, the dollar must be unseated as the world’s reserve currency, and there must be very bad stagflation so that we get enough inflation and depressed wages so people are desperate enough to work for roughly the same real wages as Chinese factory workers. If the US is less dependent on other nations for things like manufacturing, the US can do things like invade countries, set up slave and death camps, etc, with less consequence. And the chosen oligarchs get to rule over their own fiefdoms of oppressed workers.

Because he’s not that smart. It’s not even a Project 2025 thing, because it’s somewhat split on the issue of tariffs. In so far as it supports it at all, it’s mostly about working around some free trade treaties and tweaking things here or there. This strong, across the board tariff is entirely his own idea.

I have a 403B that I pay absolutely no attention to. I was curious, so I decided to look.

Three years of reasonably steady growth with what looks like a run of the mill transient dip at the end.

      Almost $10,000 evaporated since March.

I see no reason to believe that it’s transient. I think it’s just the beginning.

no, of course. What I meant to say is the mentality that you can buy now cheap because the market is on a dip, assumes a recovery which, this time around, it not at all likely.

If you do not have much money, it would be best to save it in a less volatile medium than plummeting stock under the madness that is this MAGA presidency.

A long time ago, republicans needed an easy way to get voters to vote against their own interests and instead vote in the interest of the corporate overclass. Abortion. It’s genius. Make the preachers ultra wealthy by getting them to preach about something the Bible never seemed concerned about. Abortion. They’re murdering babies, you just have to get out and vote.

Eventually that strategy brought diminishing returns. They overturned Roe and the issue doesn’t have the same bite that it once had. They needed a new plan. Wait, I’ve got it. Trans people existing. Trans people bad, and they’re trying to assimilate your children by existing. They’re trans animals now, pooping in litter boxes at school. How long until you have to refer to your children by neopronouns under the threat of incarceration?

Seriously. This is how trump won the election. This issue is the issue they chose and it works. I hear it from my rightoid coworkers all the time. The GOP creates boogeymen to get idiots to the polls and it works, and the democrats have nothing to counter it.

Oh, come on now. It wasn’t just all about trans people. You’re forgetting the real threats.

Are you not forgetting the threat of tens of thousands of dog-eating Hatians in Springfield, Ohio? Notice how you haven’t heard a peep about dog-eating Hatians in Springfield, Ohio any more, because God-King Trump solved the problem of dog-eating Hatians!

And we had another problem about having a really, really old white guy with cognitive issues sitting in the Oval Office. Democrats tried replacing the old white guy with a <gasp!> black woman and the country collectively stood up and said “No, not like that!”, and lost their collective minds. So of course we did the sensible thing and went back to electing an old white guy with cognitive issues, and everybody lived happily ever after and nothing went wrong.

Then of course there was the Israel conflict, where everybody was upset over Biden’s support for Israel and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. So of course, the only sensible solution to that was to elect someone who promised to genocide harder, annex the territory, and turn it into beachfront property for the rich.

And all of this, of course, was meant to bring down the price of eggs. My understanding is that Trump had a meeting with the National Institute of Chickens the other day, and they are the ones who persuaded Trump to impose a 29% tax on uninhabited Antarctic islands out of fear of having to compete with Antarctic penguin eggs.

As a result of Trump, we’ve restored the dignity of the Presidency by making sure the status-quo is maintained, eliminated the threat of dog-eating Hatians, brought peace in the Middle East by letting Israel just steamroll over everything, and now have a President who is taking it to the front lines on the war on eggs! What more could we possibly ask for? <criessilentlyincorner>

Also I might add the non-voters that did not vote for Kamala because they did not find her compelling enough. Whilst the alternative was authoritarian, racist and mysognistic.

As far as I can tell, it boils down to some combination of three reasons: they’re bigots; they’re stupid; or they’re selfish. Bigotry is self-explanatory. If they actually believed that he would do good things and help the country, then they’re clearly stupid. If they didn’t care how his actions hurt others but thought they’d help them financially, then they’re selfish. Now, if they’re selfish and not wealthy (wealthy being not like two houses and a couple millions in savings but rather own a couple yachts and an island) then they’re also stupid on top of being selfish.

The United States has a good deal of cultural rot. As a culture, we’re sick and have been for decades (and that’s not even getting into the nation’s original sin of slavery/racism). Carter rightly pointed it out in his “malaise speech.” A large number of Americans are simply incapable of thinking about others outside themselves. We are incapable of taking on large projects for the collective good. And because of that, we defunded education for decades leading to the stupid, selfish population of today.

Felons who are denied the right to vote, and felons who are only felons because they were bullied into false guilty pleas. People whose lives have been impacted by the violent and bipartisan supported war on drugs, including family members who have been killed by ridiculously violent police actions. When things are bad enough for someone, the lesser of two evils is still evil enough that there is no incentive to participate.

I’m not talking about the majority of the people who didn’t vote. There are a lot of apathetic and willfully ignorant non-voters we can blame. We can also blame those that chose not to vote on a single issue when Trump was the obviously worse outcome for that single issue.

Ultimately the people that are the most to blame are the people who voted for Republicans.

Sorry, I just can’t blame people whose lives are destroyed by the system when they choose not to participate in the system. Choosing the lesser evil is fine for those of us where the lesser one isn’t imprisoning family members through forced confessions or shooting relatives in no knock raids. Both available parties regularly campaign with being tough on crime and both follow through.

A very significant portion of those who didnt vote were just people that couldn’t be bothered. And another significant portion were those who just abstained because Harris wasn’t tough enough on Isreal, and I’m sure those people are happy with that decision now. Palestine will be free any day now, surely. Yes there is a lot of voter suppression, but things were way too close with a lot of people not voting to claim that that made all the difference. They weren’t ALL disenfranchised. Plenty just made a choice not to vote.

          So… I do blame them.

centrists support genocide and then blame everyone but themselves when genocide support isn’t a winning issue outside of their wing of the party.

I’d have much rather had someone who was actually progressive, or at minimum, not supportive of Isreal’s genocide. But that wasn’t an option, was it? Harris and Biden’s positions on Isreal were bullshit. But so was Trumps. At best they were a wash on that subject. And Trump was objectively worse in every other regard.

People that do not live in reality, that do not understand that under our system you often have to vote for the lesser of two evils to save yourself from the greater of them, are children that need to grow the fuck up.

I voted for harris. You don’t have to convince me. Also, the election is over and you don’t have to carry water for her anymore.

Just because centrists got their only wish and we didn’t have a choice to vote against genocide, that doesn’t mean we don’t get to gripe about it.

Votes being close is why voter suppression and not voting for Harris because she wasn’t good enough to use as a vote against Trump had such a big impact.

But in any democracy there will be a significant portion of voters who either aren’t engaged or are unwilling to stand with the available options. You can blame them, but you should really be blaming the Trump voters.

Voter suppresssion was a significant tie breaker. Also keep in mind that a lot of people get shafted by both parties and have given up.

          I don’t blame them.

To be honest, I would be more inclined to accept this if literally every state in the country hadn’t shifted rightward, including deep blue states that not only didn’t engage in voter suppression but also aimed to expand voting rights.

California of all states stared looking competitive. There was no voter suppression going on there.

So you don’t accept that voter suppression is an overall issue in other states because California is expanding voter access?

50 out of 50 states shifted to the right for one reason or another. Voter suppression has nothing to do with that.

You can either blame the voter suppression boogeyman or you can try to figure out why even deep blue states with no voter suppression started shifting rightward. Whatever makes you feel better.

It is a combination of things, voter suppression being one of them and a common tie breaker in battleground states.

When there is a shift, voter suppression is a common denominator on flipping close states. I’m just talking about one part of the overall issue, not saying it is the entire issue.

Since California was your chosen state to target:

Trump got less votes this time than before, the Dems lost way more, and still beat him by a pretty decent margin

What this tells you should be pretty fuckin obvious, because it’s been said loudly since before the election: the Dems ran a dog shit campaign that even their usual supporters hated. Courting the Cheney’s was a mistake

True, the penis carries more weight than the skin color, but when you combine no penis and more melanin, it’s a bigger handicap than just the sum of its parts.

I’ve heard that once you go Black, you never go back, so maybe there is a correlation between penis weight and skin color after all…

but when you combine no penis and more melanin, it’s a bigger handicap than just the sum of its parts.

Ah, but remember that Trump also won against the one with no penis, less melanin, and a lot of buttery males. I think that is conclusive, scientific proof that most voters see a penis as a necessary quality in a President.

Yes, and he would have won by more if she had more melanin.

I know someone who is the target demographic for Trump (white, evangelical, 50+ yo man), and refused to vote for him. However, he “couldn’t bring” himself to vote for Kamala.

        It’s so stupid

Pulled all of my funds out of the market months ago…

No idea why people thought leaving their retirement funds in the stock market with trump in charge would be a good idea.

The problem is you have to buy back in at the dip. And Noone knows when the dip will be done dipping.

Professional stock traders don’t know when the dip will end, so unless you are retiring in the next year or 3, you need to invest back in something… so start thinking about what that means for you

        Yes and no.

Let’s say you sell now. Then stocks drop by 10%. (Making up numbers for easy illustration). You wait to see if they’re going any lower, and the next thing you know, stocks have regained 5% of that and are on the way back up. If that’s the point where you buy back in, and assuming they don’t drop again, you’ve still come out well ahead.

It’s not so much about “buying the dip”. It’s knowing when the dip is over, things have started rebounding, and getting in before all the losses have been regained.

This is the most important advice for investing right now. Volatility is something you should be considering before investing, not afterwards. Let present holdings ride, and use this as a time to recheck your personal comfort level with investment risk going forward.
