When Trump was first elected, it made me realize how stupid most of the US is. The results of this election were not surprising, I even linked to the sort of self-serving articles that preceded just before Hillary-Trump’s elections to people who were doing the same in this election. At least in this election, it’s sort of like Israel, they are leaving no doubt about who they support. I don’t even care if Kamala gets the popular vote, most criticize the electoral college word only and refuse to consider gerrymandering as electoral fraud, leading to it occurring in greater and newer ways this election.

Gerrymandering is clearly electoral fraud, but

      • it’s not black and white. There’s no clear line between fraud and good
      • the people benefiting the fraud are the ones in control of it
      • gerrymandering does not affect presidential or senate elections

Why are americans so stupid and yet manage to export so much smart stuff from tech to podcasts to scientists. Is it some sort of dystopia where 1% rules, 20% live in a bubble and 79% are just brain dead idiots?

Why do people from Europe go and build monuments and luxury in Saudi Arabia?

Money. Same answer in the US.

The US is an oligarchy, as attested to by this Oxford study. To answer your question, mostly yes, hence places like “Silicon Valley” and institutions like the electoral college.

Yeah but almost every American I meet here traveling in SEA or Europe is a perfectly reasonable person.

Dunno I just am in such disbelief that my world experience doesn’t match reality at all. I even consider myself pretty well traveled with 20 years of experience traveling around the globe though admittedly I’ve never been to the USA yet and I fear I might not get to see Yellowstone or Big Sur ever at this point or do I even want to?

Kinda sucks to be a fan of US now ngl.

The people you meet while travelling are not the average people. The average American never travels to another state, let alone to other continents… Same is true for many people in many countries: Asians visiting Europe are top % of population in wealth and brains. It’s dissapointing and depressing but fox probably gives you a more true picture of average Americans than Americans you meet while travelling.

The more conservative you are, the less likely you are to travel. The less likely you are to be open to experiencing “them”.

When I went back to my high school reunion, I tried reconnecting with an old buddy of mine. I found it a little odd that his life seemed exactly the same as in high school, but eventually he admitted that he had never been more than about 50 miles from the town we grew up in. Never left the state, much less the country. Never left the surrounding rural cluster of towns. Never flew. Not even a road trip to a coast, amusement park or city. No changes in food from what he grew up with. No people different from him. What the everliving fuck?

The podcasters you follow are not the mainstream in the US. Probably the majority of mainstream podcasters targeting men, were pro Trump in one way or the other. Either by inviting guests that were pro-Trump, or inviting quacks that are telling men that the left is taking away their masculinity.

      Haha, yeah that’ll show em!

Now instead of having a president that supports the genocide of Palestinians you’ll have… checks notes … a president that supports the genocide of Palestinians. Wait there’s more here… doesn’t believe in climate change, a guy who actively wants to prove that vaccines don’t work actually in charge of health related shit, enabling the genocide of Ukraine (hey a whole new genocide!), pulling out of alliances or and what’s this last fun one, threatening the already flawed foundations of US democracy by, among other things, threatening to deploy the military against political opponents.

Is that was winning and being morally superior looks like? Because it looks pretty awful from here.

Seriously? Fuck you. This supports the genocide of every LGBTQ+ person in all of North America, be it directly or indirectly. No one wants what is happening in Gaza. But, I have to say the potential genocide (in the complete erasure of culture as well as open murders with little to no consequences sense) here is even higher.

I have the unfortunate circumstance of being a trans woman in GA. I already have had to completely shut off most contact with people, both work and personal.

I’ve already had rocks thrown at me in an attempt to kill me (this was years ago, even). I already feel like I have to carry a gun. If things go the way they seem, I will even have to order in groceries because it will further empower the people that hate my existence.

The foreign policy is shit, no question. However, I don’t like the possibility of being raped and murdered by some asshole that thinks he understands Co² emissions after watching some video.

I have a lot to say here, especially as a very blue collar machinist. I will refrain, though.

In conclusion: by “avoiding” the genocide in Gaza (which may have been resolved), you have also doomed people like me to maybe live in fear for the rest of our lives.

Focus on self-reflection and redeeming yourself for accepting genocide. Go do some work in your community and for humanity.

I said this before, and I’ll say it again, since both parties in the election (don’t try and claim that the greens have any hope of winning, they only serve to split the Democrat vote) seem disinterested in the horrific situation in Palestine, you pick the least bad candidate.

If you don’t, you get the worst candidate for everyone.

I am not American, but if I were, I’d pick Harris no question.

Since you are supporting Trump, tell me, how does is feel supporting a sexist, racist, convicted felon who also supports genocide?

Remember that in the US idiotic election system, any vote other than the Dems is a vote for the Reps, and any vote for the Reps is a vote for a worse society.

This proves that you need to at least pander to the left to win, i.e. the only consistently anti-genocide group in the country. Maybe you should join them instead of tolerating genocide.

Honestly I’m wondering if that’s why the margin Trump is winning is so “huge”. The US will never vote for a woman president. Both times Trump has gone up against a woman, he’s won. But against a man, he lost.

When CNN interviewed a black man at a previously Biden stronghold in Georgia, he said “women are emotional” and “I don’t think they make great leaders”

The men who voted for Biden in 2020 voted for Trump because they were afraid of a women being in a position of power.

No, I heard your gotcha. But the reality is standing to the side telling people “I told you so” is just sticking your head in the sand. You are enabling a worse genocide just for the sake of moral masturbation.

You might as well tell the people feeding the homeless they are “accepting homelessness” as well. Amounts to the same bullshit logic.

But when Trump enables a full scale genocide, you can pay yourself on the back and say “I had nothing to do with that”.

I hope that sense of moral superiority helps you sleep at night. I hope that you are right, and that the Palestinian people won’t face a worse wrath because of your folly. And I truly hope that the road to hell isn’t paved with your good intentions. Because the way I see it, letting Trump win may well be the bell tolling on humanity, and those who stood to the side and didn’t help will have all that blood on their hands.

Thanks for the concern for my soul, but I would gladly damn it to prevent the problems we are about to face. Maybe when it gets bad, you will be willing to get yours dirty to help for a change.

Bit of a tangent, but this pains me every time I read this in threads.

I wanted to join Lemmy after the Reddit exodus, found out that ml was “the main one” made by the devs and joined it. Last time I carefully tried to pick an instance was Mastodon, and I hardly ever found any content. Decided to check back in the other day, and every account except for the admin’s (like less than 50) was removed for inactivity.

I’m not some far-right or Russian troll, but because most of them are on that instance everyone on it gets this reputation.

Canada has an increasing anti immigrant sentiment right now. They’ve announced big cut backs to the number of immigrants allowed. Furthermore, moving to another country is difficult and expensive. It’s not a realistic option for most people.

Tbh most of the ire aimed at immigrants here is specifically targeted to either Indian or Ukrainian migrants. Infrastructure is genuinely buckling under the weight of migration but it’s a case of too little investment and not entirely the result of immigration.

I can say as a white, western immigrant to Canada that I’ve never had anyone complain about my immigration however I’ve had locals complain about immigration to me forgetting that I am indeed one of the immies.

Not in my experience, no. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with any particular group, although some people may be more vocal about Indian immigrants in particular - for what seems to be racially motivated reasons in my opinion.

The main complaint is that we’ve allowed too many people all at once and we now face issues with the lack of housing availability and affordability, the state of the economy, overpopulation and the potential strain on public resources.

I’m still holding out some kinda vague hope for the “final numbers” but…right now I’m not alone in feeling a little lost and confused at what we’re about to go through and what the heck life will look like in the near future.

A lot of previous elections felt like empty hype and doomsaying but this one feels like we’re gonna feel it immediately.

I’m in one of the bluest cities in one of the bluest states…I’ve voted in every major and local election since I was old enough, I’ve protested, I’ve tried to get people to vote, I’ve marched, I’ve tried to kindly change minds through patience…I’ve been doing it since high school and I don’t know what else I can personally do. If people hit the streets, I’ll be there. But I’m with you, it’s like no matter what I personally do things are burning around me and this election proves there’s much more hate in this world than I’d hoped. I still think there’s light in everyone, but I can understand why people are angry with us… we’re dropping the ball hard as a country. meanwhile I’ll just be sitting here in the middle of the night, wide awake but exhausted, hugging my dog because we have no control and I know half the voters are okay with taking away my rights. Sending hopeful feelings for you to wherever else in the country you are.

I really appreciate this. I’m stuck awake and exhausted too. My house all voted and did what we could, here in NV, but I hate that nagging feeling that it wasn’t enough.

I’m praying to maintain that fervor, that raging fire to believe in good and fortify against coming evil… But it’s one crisis out of our hands to the next, and I’m just so tired. :(

I find myself returning more and more often to the ever and increasingly relevant:

                  Ephesians 6:12-17

                  Eph 6:12-18 KJV For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Sending hopeful feelings for you to wherever else in the country you are.

You too, friend. We’re still here. We’ll get through this one day at a time.

      • There’s no way anyone who older person would choose a known real estate grifter
      • There’s no way a parent would choose anyone threatening their child’s future

I’m sure we could go on, but I just read an article that Trump did better than expected with every demographic except college educated women. How ?

I am fucking gutted, I am so sad and angry and I don’t know what to do. I am overall a happy and positive person and believe in humanity but this win feels like it’s stripping me of a piece of that and I hate that! I hate that I feel so much hate right now, it’s exactly what I preach against, yet here I am. I can’t believe this is happening

Ikr… I don’t even own a car, I walk to work, take the MRT everywhere etc. and the Americans are electing a president who says “Drill baby, drill”. I’m not an American, but it will affect us all… I live in Taiwan now and I’m fucking afraid of what his presidency will do to the geopolitical balance with China.

While I have no idea how to handle China’s ever bigger presence on the world stage, I know the spiteful antagonism is not it.

That’s how I felt here in the UK when I woke up to see the majority voted for Brexit. Before that I thought people can’t be that dumb. Apparently they can.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I’m essentially an atheist too (I don’t even give it a label for myself because god and religion are just not a part of my life, and I don’t need them to be). And yet somehow I feel I have exponentially more compassion and value of morality than a large swath of these people voting in a monster, acting under the guise of being “good Christians”. Maybe I’m delusional, maybe I’m the one missing something, I don’t know. I still believe in humanity, but man I’m just sad right now. Anywho, I’ll take all the prayers and positive energy for everyone that I can get right now, so thank you
